Tilicho Lake and Thorang La Pass Trekking
This Tilicho Lake and Thorang La Pass trek has been planned to trek through the world’s highest lake and then trek up to the high pass of Thorang La and then to the holy place for both Hindu as well as Buddhist—Muktinath. This trek will begin from Besi Sahar in Marshyangdi Valley. From there trek, continues up to Jagat, Dharapani, Chame, Pisang, Manang, Tilicho Lake, Thorang La Pass, Muktinath, and Jomsom.
This trek trail passes through forests of pine, bamboo and other fauna. While trekking, we can get a chance to see different species of birds and wildlife like pheasant, lophophorus, snow leopard, musk deer, yaks, etc. There are few tea houses and lodges on the way to this trek. You can take short tea/coffee break on the route and you can stay overnight in lodge. This is quite difficult trek, so one must be very careful while trekking in this region. One can get sick from altitude sickness. To avoid this, we must properly acclimatize while trekking in altitude. Also, you must follow the instructions given by the trekking guide. Also, one must be careful about the weather as the climate can be unpredictable some time in high altitudes.
There are monasteries, chortens, prayer wheels/flags on the way in this trek. You can enjoy your short visit here. Also, you can interact with the local people while visiting the village and take part in daily activities. This 19-day trek will be your memorable trek. Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu:
Upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be hearty welcomed by our staffs. After completion of airport duties (visas, documents, etc.), you will proceed towards the arrival gate and look for our representatives. After that, you will be escorted to Hotel. After checking in, you can take rest for few hours and go out for sightseeing with our guide or representatives. Over night at Hotel.
Day 02: Kathmandu – Trek preparation.
After finishing breakfast, we start our day with sightseeing some local historical and cultural attractions near Kathmandu including durbar square and temples like Pashupatinath, Baudha, and Swyambhu (monkey temple). At afternoon, we will meet our tour guide, team leader, and other members of our trip and discuss about the Langtang trek where you can ask any questions regarding this trek.
Day 03: Kathmandu to Ngadi (via Besi Sahar):
Today, we will start our trek early as we have to drive long to reach starting point of the trek. It will take almost about 6 to 7 hours to reach Ngadi. While travelling, we will see beautiful green hills as well as rivers like Trishuli and Marshyangdi flowing. We can see people enjoying rafting in this river. We can also see beautiful small villages, greeneries, farms, people doing their daily choirs, etc. We can see those views throughout travelling. After about 4 to 5 hours of drive on the Prithvi Highway, we reach Besi Sahar. After resting there few times, we will catch a local bus to reach Bulbule. From Bulbule, we will trek about 1 hour to reach Ngadi. Overnight stay at Ngadi includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 04: Ngadi to Jagat:
We will start our trek today following the beautiful Marshyangdi river. While trekking, we will see different villages on the way. We will also see people doing their duties while trekking. The majority of people here are involved in farming, so we can see people in their farms. Beautiful view of mountains, green hills, and rivers accompanies our trek. After abour 5 to 6 hours of walk, we will reach Jagat. Overnight stay at Jagat includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 05: Jagat to Dharapani:
Today, we will trek easily without any hassle. Today, we will enter Manang district. Trail today is rocky and slightly uphill as well as downhill. We will walk through village, fields of rice, potato, barley. After walking for about 4 to 5 hours and crossing bridge, we reach Tal. This is the first village of Manang district. There are few houses and people living there. We can take a short break and continue our trek to reach Kodo village and then to reach Dharapani. This Dharapani village is a big village. We can see many people and houses in this village. Overnight stay at Dharapani includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 06: Dharapani to Chame:
Today, we will walk rocky trails through the forest. We will even trek through places swiped away by landslide. One must be very careful while walking on these sites. While continuing our walk, we will be mesmerized by beautiful view of Annapurna mountain, Lamjung mountains, and lush green vegetations. We can take a break for a while and enjoy the natural beauty. After 5 to 6 hours of walking through forest and farms, we will reach Chame — headquarter of Manang district. There are hotels/lodges and house here. We can relax in hot spring here in Chame. Overnight stay at Chame includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 07: Chame to Pisang:
Today’s trek continues through dense forest. Trail is narrow and steep. Trail follows the Marshyandi river. As the trail widens up, we will see beautiful mountain ranges. We will cross many bridges to reach Dudh Pokhari. From Dudh Pokhari, it is the best view point to see Annapurna II. We can take break for some time to view the beautiful Annapurna II. Further continuing our trek, we leave Dudh Pokhari and follow trails through pine forest. Walking through this forest, we reach Pisang in about 5-6 hours of walk. Overnight stay at Pisang includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 08: Pisang to Manang (via Ngwal):
On today’s trek, there are two trails to choose from, one is quite long and steep uphill and little difficult to walk from Ngwal and another one is short and easy which pass through Humde. We will choose a trail via Ngwal because from this trail we can see beautiful view of Annapurna ranges and hills as well as we can see some old villages on the way. We will notice a change in landscape, vegetation and weather due to high altitude. The weather is cold and dry in this area, so one will feel slight difficulty while walking. We can see monastery on the way to Manang. We will see Barge Monastery on the way. This is the largest monastery in this village. After walking for about 6 hours, we finally reach Manang. Overnight stay at Manang includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 09: Manang Rest Day:
Today is the rest day (for acclimatization) here in Manang. In the next day or two, trek will be challenging as we climb high altitude, so it is recommended to rest one day here. We will not stay idle for the whole day. We will do some short hiking nearby and do some local sightseeing. We can go for a short 2-hour hike up to the cave above or we can go for short hike up to Bhojo Gompa or Gangapurna lake. Also, we can trek to a nearby village, Braga. We can do some little chit chat with the local people there. There is Himalayan Rescue Association from where we can get information about high altitude sickness and its precaution. After few hours spending here, we will then come back to our hotel. Overnight stay at Manang includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 10: Manang to Khangsar:
Today, we will trek from Manang to reach Khangsar. It will take about 2 hours to reach Khangsar. We can take short breaks to enjoy the beauty of the nature while trekking. We will visit Gangapurna Lake on the way. We will pass through village with the good view of the surroundings like Khangsar Khola and Tilicho Peak. In about 2 hours of walk, we will reach Khangsar. Overnight stay at hotel includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 11: Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp:
It will take about 4 hours to reach Tilicho Base Camp from Khangsar. While trekking, we will see sheep grazing in the grassy field. About few minutes of walk from this field, we will reach a viewpoint from where we can get good view of the entire valley. A steep descent from here will take you to Tilicho Base Camp. Overnight stay at base camp include meals; breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 12: Tilicho Base Came to Shree Kharka:
From Tilicho base camp, we will trek to reach Shree Kharka. A slight descend from base camp will take us to Shree Kharka. We can enjoy beautiful view of the surrounding while walking. After few hours of walk, we will reach Shree Kharka. Overnight stay at Shree Kharka includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 13: Shree Kharka to Yak Kharka:
The trail today continues towards the north side with few pastures and juniper trees. We will gain elevation and will feel slight difficulty in breathing while trekking above. The rocky trail passes through Ghunsa village where the roof the house is covered with mud. Further trekking up from there, the trail continues through land where yaks, horses, and other animals grazes. Upon continuing our trek, we will cross a river to reach ancient Mani wall in a field. Few minutes of walk from here, we will reach Yak Kharka. Overnight stay at Yak Kharka includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 14: Yak Kharka to Thorang Phedi:
It will take about 4 hours of walk to reach Thorang Phedi today. We will walk slowly and easily to avoid altitude problem today. Due to the altitude, the weather is dry and the environment is deserted. We continue to trek on these environments taking break to catch a breath and to enjoy the natural beauty. Trail leads us to Letdar. From here, Mt. Chulu East and West can be viewed. And few hours walk from here, we will reach Thorang Phedi. Overnight stay at Thorang Phedi includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 15: Thorang Phedi to Muktinath:
Today’s trek is the major destination of our trek. Trek will be about 7-8 hours long. Today, we will trek to reach Muktinath via Thorang La Pass. Today’s trek will be one of the most memorable trek. Today’s trail is difficult and icy with high altitude. Today’s trek is accompanied by beautiful mountain range. Once we reach top of the Thorang La pass, we will be mesmerized by the mountain range. One must to there to adore the beauty of the nature. After few minutes spending there adoring the beauty of the nature, we further trek to reach Muktinath. By the evening, we will reach Muktinath, holy place for both Hindu as well as Buddhist. It is a temple of Lord Bishnu. There are monastery and temples of different god and goddess in this area. Overnight stay at Muktinath.
Day 16: Muktinath to Jomsom:
After a visit to Muktinath and its surrounding area, we trek back to reach Jomsom. It will take about 4 hours to reach Jomsom Bazar. Trail is mostly downhill and you will see Kali Gandaki river flowing. The area is mostly deserted yet beautiful. After about 2 hours of walking, we can see a beautiful small village in Kagbeni. There are few houses and farms over there. Most of the houses are influenced with Tibetan culture and architecture. We will pass through Jharkot and Kingar village. After about 2 hours of walk, we finally reach Jomsom — Headquarter of Mustang District. There are many houses, hotels/guest houses to stay in. There is airport where only morning flights are conducted up to Pokhara. It is not possible to fly in afternoon time due to high wind. Overnight stay at Jomsom includes meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Day 17: Jomsom to Pokhara:
From Jomsom, we will take early morning flight to Pokhara. In about 30 minute’s time, you will reach Pokhara. Upon reaching, you can enjoy the day roaming around the valley. You can roam around the lake side and do boating in the Phewa Lake and go to Peace stupa which is about 30-minute walk from the lake. You can enjoy the view of the valley from top of the stupa. At evening, you can enjoy your meal at the local restaurants. Overnight stay at hotel.
Day 18: Pokhara to Kathmandu (by bus):
Today we will be back to Kathmandu. This will be end day of our trek. We will do sightseeing in Pokhara and then catch a bus to be back to Kathmandu. In about 6-7 hours we will reach Kathmandu. We will have our lunch on the way to Kathmandu. Overnight stay at Kathmandu includes.
Day 19: Final Day:
Today will be your last day here in Nepal. You can still do some last moment shopping or local sightseeing if there is any leisure time left. And approximately 3 hours before scheduled flight, our representative will escort you to the airport.
